Description
Our planet functions as a single living organism made of Earth, Sun, Moon, Water and Life.
These dynamic elements interact to create the atmosphere we breathe, and the seasons, water cycle, currents and weather patterns that allow life to thrive.
Each lifeform contributes and participates in this complex engine of Life, from the tiniest bacteria to the largest whale - from the most majestic of Giant Redwoods to the most humble worms and fungi.
This Living World is REAL, alive all around us every moment.
We are a part of it, embraced by it, supported by it and inextricably dependent upon it. We are also the lifeform with the greatest impact upon it.
This piece honors our living planet - the miraculous, intelligent, interconnected and evolving system of Life that has developed here, on this one, single planet in the known Universe.
Gaia is the mythological envisioning of this vast collective being, an Earth Goddess radiant with abundance and diversity. She is not an ethereal spirit, but grounded; numinous yet rooted in the rocks and soil, cloaked in life-giving water, connecting all the elements of the Natural World (including ourselves), seeking balance and harmony.
I want to convey through this image some sense of the wonder I feel when I connect intimately with the Living World - my awe at the incomprehensible complexity and aliveness of the multitude of diverse organisms and ecosystems and environments that fill our planet with true wonders. I want to encourage all humans to remember that we are participants in this greater, collective system - connected to it on a primal level, as a child to its mother. We must remember that we are not superior to it, not in control of it, not outside of it. We are inside of it, entwined with it, inseparable from it.
When we truly realize this, the Living World becomes innately sacred: holy and deserving of our deepest respect, gratitude and preservation. Without our extended family of creatures and plants co-creating the world around us, our reality as we know it would not, could not exist. We must remember how precious, and how fragile - our living world truly is and love it as we love ourselves, as we love Creation, for there is no difference.
